Six on Saturday – 29th May ’21

This week was my second Covid-19 vaccine – no problems afterwards either. As for the weather this last week there’s been lots of rain until about Thursday. Now we have to put up with the weeds growing fast and sudden appearance of snails and slugs! Oh well that’s the gardening life. I have too many plants but I’ll squeeze them them in some how. Potatoes are doing very well, keep covering them up with compost and perhaps no more frost but you never know. Tomato plants doing well too. Garden is looking very green and more inviting with colour here and there. May have lost a courgette plant – snail the culprit. Tulips have finished but there’s still lots of Narcissus in bloom. Spent some time pruning the Forsythia in the front garden along with pulling out some Muscari, they get to be over the top sometimes with the foliage.

Now it’s time for this weeks Six on Saturday.

1) Narcissus ‘Sun Disc’. These bright and cheerful Narcissus are almost all in bloom. They seem to to be smiling. They have to be a favourite for this year any way. They grow about 12″ (30cm) and the flowers are 1.5″ across. The small cup is slightly darker yellow. Recommended.

2) Pieris – Formosan. This Forest Flame had to be included this week as it has become very dark red leaved more so than a few weeks a go. It’s been in the shadow of other shrubs if almost stalled up now I have relieved it from any competition.

3. Heuchera ‘Rio’. Red to almost chocolate brown the leaves vary so much through the seasons. I thought this may have been lost due to weather conditions as it took some while to show any new growth but no need to worry here it is in full glory. There will be some flowers though not as significant as the leaves though a bonus.

4. Diascia ‘Diamond Dark Orange’. I rescued five plug plants on a visit to a garden centre. They where put in the greenhouse and coaxed back to some kind of life and this is the result and ready for planting in a hanging basket. A summer of vibrant red flowers.

5. Allium ‘Purple Sensation’. I bought four varieties of Alliums and this is the first of them to flower. I have grown them before but they’re long gone, along with many other plants! It was difficult getting a good shot of this as the wind was making it difficult.

6) Digitalis – Foxglove. One of several plants I bought as plug plants back in the autumn. This one has striking maroon spots on a cream throat. There’s the plants with dark red flowers yet to open.
