Yet another dreary week of December. It’s been cold and damp. Not wanting to make one do any gardening. I would go check on the greenhouse as there are many plants overwintering ready for a spring planting. Check what’s going on with various shrubs and look to see what might be happening to the containers with collectively 400 Spring flowering bulb. Let’s begin the week’s Six on Saturday.
1) New additions Hellebore and Rosa. It was on a visit to a nearby Garden Centre I spotted these two. First, was the rose Lady Marmalade as it’s on the list of roses of three to purchase. Second, Helleborus – Christmas Carol, apt for this time of year. I could have bought more plants, got to keep the garden centres going, but I didn’t. That was very well controlled! I was like a kid in a sweet shop.
2) Reddening leaves, Cotoneaster. This was the opportunity to see how these would come out in different depths of the shrub. The first is ablaze of red and also looking from distance puts on a good show. The second shot not so great but gives some idea of the colour ranges along with lonicera, nitita in the background.
3) Camelia buds. It won’t be long before these hardy plants will suddenly burst into bloom. this is a red variety, name unknown. Look forward to this winter bloomer.
4) Mystery shrub with buds nearly in bloom.
5) New Life for the Spring. Spotted this growth in one of the containers. Crocus eager to get going for the Spring. It’s cold out there and this container is facing north at the moment, it’s doing very well and sure there will be more to follow very soon.
6) Winter Jasmine. The winter jasmine has been stupendous this year. However, the weather being so damp has put it into a decline but this is somewhat happy part of the tangle of this messy shrub growing out of place.

The cotoneaster’s range of colors is wonderful. What kind of medium have you planted your crocus in? I am new to bulbs and looking to acquire as much insight into their successful cultivation before trying my hand at it.

It is the best feeling see the buds and the shoots pushing through the ground, just what we need in the depths of winter. Well done for your garden centre restraint! Is your mystery shrub a Mexican Orange Blossom?

The colour on that cotoneaster is something else! Wow.

I’d hazard a guess that the mystery shrub is Choisya, Mexican Orange Blossom, which has a white flower with a delicious fragrance – and there is a lovely smell from the leaves if crushed.
